The Italian police found the Dutchman who stabbed his father to death in Italy sleeping on a bench near a chapel in the northern Piedmont region. The provincial commander Giuseppe Carubia of the carabinieri (military police) confirmed this at a press conference.
The suspect in stabbing his own father, 65, and a family friend, 60, appears to be in good shape, Carubia said. The chapel is on a high mountain and the road to it is difficult. Finally, three military police officers found him. Hunters who know the area well assisted in the search.
The Dutchman did not resist his arrest, but kept silent. The search, which involved some 200 military police officers, lasted nearly 40 hours.
The suspect is assigned a lawyer and the police take him into custody. Within five days, the Dutchman will appear before the judge for the first time, who will decide whether he will be detained longer, Matteo Ettore Grasso of the carabinieri of the province of Cuneo said to the ANP. Evidence of the stabbings is expected to be discussed in subsequent hearings.
Manhunt causes unrest in the region
The suspect was examined in hospital earlier on Friday. Grasso cannot say anything about his health. The Dutchman is said to have psychological problems, but the carabinieri have not received official confirmation of this.
Grasso also acknowledges that the stabbings in the town of Montaldo di Mondovì and the ensuing manhunt have caused much unrest in the area. “These are normally very quiet villages, so an event like this came as a shock.”
During the search, the Italian police cooperated with the Dutch police, who assisted the carabinieri with information, and the Dutch consulate in Milan. Grasso calls that collaboration “excellent”.
