On Monday, cyclists had to cover a distance of 190 kilometers, with several climbs at the end.

Van der Horn was one of eight cyclists who fled the large group after five kilometers. Eight kilometers before the finish, he also ran away from another “refugee” regiment – Swiss rider Simona Pelo from “Androni Giocattoli – Sidermec”, ahead of the big group by four seconds and celebrating one of the greatest successes in the cycling career.

The first in the group’s sprint was the Italian Davide Čimola (“Israel Start-Up Nation”), who overtook the Slovak Peter Sagan in the fight for a place on the podium.

The leader in the overall standings is still the Italian Filipo Ganna (“Ineos Grenadiers”), who is 16 seconds ahead of Jumbo Visma team member Tubis Foss and the Belgian Remko Evenpule (“Decuninck – Quick Step”) – 20 seconds.

The current second place winner from “Jumbo Visma”, the Italian Edoardo Afini, lagged behind at this stage and takes only 116th place in the overall standings, nine minutes and 45 seconds behind the leader.

On Tuesday, athletes will have to complete an 187-kilometer section with three categorized climbs on the other side of the distance.

It has already been reported that on Saturday, after the first stage on the way to the hotel, a Latvian representing the “Israel Start – Up Nation” team experienced a fall. Christ Neilands, who broke his collarbone and was unable to continue his third career in the “Giro d’Italia”.

The Giro d’Italia is celebrating its 104th anniversary this year.

The bike ride runs from May 8 to 30, when it will finish in Milan with a 29.4-kilometer-long individual ride. Last year, the Italian tour took place in October and the victory was celebrated by the British Teo Geigen-Hart.
