German police arrested three Dutchmen in the night between Thursday and Friday after a crash in the municipality of Wietzendorf in the state of Lower Saxony. The three men, aged between 20 and 32, attempted to blow up an ATM at a campsite, it was reported today. Their action failed.
According to the Osnabrück region police, the explosion was not powerful enough to blow up the ATM. The alerted officers were able to quickly find the three suspects and began a chase that would last more than 200 kilometers.
Eventually, the tires of the getaway vehicle were damaged with a kind of studded mat, so the suspects could not continue driving, and they were arrested. There was still a small amount of explosives in their car. Three residents of the area were then evacuated.
According to the Osnabrück police chief, the explosive squatters are “ruthless” and take every risk. Bomb attacks are a growing problem in the region: a record number of bomb attacks were committed in Lower Saxony last year. The Dutch are regularly involved in this.
