Dutch woman (89) dies after second corona infection

More than two months later she was admitted again. This time with fatal consequences, reports Oxford University, which also includes virologist Marion Koopmans. “She probably died of the corona virus in the end, but she was already seriously ill,” Koopmans said. The woman was suffering from Waldenstrom’s disease, a cancer of the bone marrow.

‘These are exceptions’

According to Koopmans, there are about 25 cases worldwide of people who have become infected for a second time. “We assume that these are exceptions. There will be more, but the question is whether this is something that is typical of COVID-19.”

It is not clear whether the woman is the first to die after reinfection.

Koopmans does expect that the majority of people who have had the infection will indeed be protected for longer. “That will not be lifelong, because we never see that with respiratory viruses.”

How long are you safe?

The question many people have is whether all people infected in the first wave can now become infected again. According to Koopmans, that is indeed the case, but the question is how long that will take.

Koopmans assumes that this will be at least 6 months after infection in people with a strong ‘immune response’. Koopmans: “And also that they will have fewer complaints with a new contact. But it also means that the measures really apply to everyone.”
