The water polo players easily qualified for the semi-finals of the European Championships in their own country on Tuesday. The team of national coach Evangelos Doudesis won 25-6 against Great Britain in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium in Eindhoven.
The Netherlands took off in the quarter-final against Great Britain. In the first quarter, the reigning world champion took a 7-1 lead. After which the difference increased further in the second quarter: 15-3.
The Netherlands was also extremely efficient in the second act. The team of the Greek Doudesis had no problem with Great Britain, which only scored six times. Lieke Rogge became top scorer with five goals. Simone van der Kraats, Lola Moolhuijzen and Kitty Lynn Joustra scored four times.
The Dutch team will face Italy or Hungary in the semi-finals on Thursday, which won Olympic bronze in 2021. The Italian water polo players won Olympic silver in 2016, when the Netherlands failed to qualify. Eight years earlier, the Dutch water polo players became Olympic champions in Beijing.
The Netherlands is still undefeated at the European Championships in their own country and is considered the favorite for the final victory. The water polo players have won European Championship gold five times before.
