National coach Ronald Koeman included Ajax defender Jorrel Hato in his final selection for the European Championship qualifiers against Ireland and Gibraltar on Friday. PSV midfielder Jerdy Schouten has also been selected.
It is a surprise that seventeen-year-old Hato has been called up. He was not part of the provisional selection, but is now part of the final group, which consists of 25 players.
Matthijs de Ligt (Bayern Munich), Ian Maatsen (Chelsea), Nick Olij (Sparta Rotterdam) and Micky van de Ven (Tottenham Hotspur) have been dropped from the provisional selection. In the case of De Ligt and Van de Ven, this is due to an injury.
Schouten’s return was as expected. As a player for Bologna, he made his international debut under Louis van Gaal in June 2022, after which he disappeared from the picture. He has made a strong impression at PSV this season and has earned a place in the Dutch squad again.
The Dutch team is certain of the European Championship if they win against Ireland
Justin Bijlow, Mark Fleken, Cody Gakpo and Teun Koopmeiners are also back with the Dutch team, after missing the previous international matches due to injury.
The question is who will be the first goalkeeper after Bart Verbruggen was given the opportunity against France and Greece. Bijlow and Fleken also played two international matches under Koeman. Andries Noppert has not been called up. Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong, who have been injured for some time, are also missing.
The Dutch selection gathers in Zeist on Monday. The match against Ireland is on Saturday, November 18 in the Johan Cruijff ArenA. Three days later, the qualifying series ends against Gibraltar in Faro, Portugal.
The Dutch team must win one more time to secure European Championship qualification. Even if the Netherlands loses to both Ireland and Gibraltar, direct qualification is possible. Greece must then lose to France.
