The Radio 1 program “De Zomer van…”, in which people search for records around a certain theme, had the Dutch singer Meis as a guest today. Her full name is Aysha Meis de Groot, and that probably rings a bell with music lovers: she is the daughter of singer and guitarist Marcel de Groot and granddaughter of cabaret singer Boudewijn de Groot. She has been building her own musical career for several years under the stage name Meis. Among other things, she performed as support act for the Belgian band Bazart.
Meis chose “concept albums” as the theme, records built around a specific theme. Her upcoming debut album “Black/Wit”, of which the first single “Zonder” was launched in early April, is also a concept album. “I know that listeners listen very critically to something like this,” she laughs in “The summer of…”, “but that’s how it started.” What theme is “Black/White” about? “I wrote that entire record, the lyrics, in the hospital, after a very serious operation,” it sounds.
