A Dutch singer has a chance to participate for Germany in the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö. 23-year-old Bodine Monet from Zandvoort has no German roots, but will soon be in the final of the German national song contest in Berlin.
If she wins, she will become the first Dutch person to represent the eastern neighbors at the Eurovision Song Contest.
Each country chooses its entry for the Eurovision Song Contest in its own way. In Germany, the winner is chosen during a major television broadcast. The Netherlands has been sticking to a selection by a group of experts for a number of years. For example, Joost Klein’s yet unknown song was chosen this year from a record number of more than six hundred entries.
Countries may be represented by artists of another nationality. The Netherlands has never used this. Other countries do: a well-known example is the Canadian Céline Dion, who competed for Switzerland in 1988. Germany previously sent artists from Austria, Norway, Denmark and Sweden to the Eurovision Song Contest. Stefania Liberakakis from Utrecht participated for Greece in 2021.
In Germany anyone can register with their own number. “As a child I already dreamed of participating in the Eurovision Song Contest,” Bodine Monet told the regional broadcaster NH. “I knew it would be difficult to play for the Netherlands writer’s camp I collaborated with musicians from other countries. That’s how the idea arose to make a song for the German Eurovision Song Contest.”
Nearly 700 songs were submitted. A jury made an initial selection. The artists had to audition and seven finalists emerged.
In the final, a professional jury and the audience decide who can go to the Eurovision Song Contest. Because Germany is among the Big Five – the five countries that are assured of a place in the final due to a large financial contribution – the winner will in any case be on stage in Malmö on May 11.
Practice German
The 23-year-old Bodine is the only non-German finalist this year. In the run-up to the national final on February 16, she brushed up on her German.
During the live show she will be introduced to the German audience, with an introductory video and an interview. “That has all been recorded before. When I had to go to Germany for the interview, I first spent three whole days studying German. It also helps that I live in Zandvoort. In the summer you only hear German around here. I I guess I just picked that up already.”
Bodine Monet is in the final of the German Eurovision Song Contest with the song Tears Like Rain:
Germany has had little success at the Eurovision Song Contest in recent years. The German rock band ended last year Lord Of The Lost with the number Blood & Glitter in last place. Germany last won the song festival in 2010 thanks to the singer Lena with the number Satellite.
