Dutch ship loses 30,000 liters of fuel off Canadian coast

A Dutch freighter has lost 30,000 liters of fuel off the east coast of Canada. It goes according to Average Canadian for the ship MV Alaskaborg, which is owned by the Koninklijke Wagenborg from Delfzijl.

The ship, which is 143 meters long, was sailing from Baie Corneau in the province of Quebec to Rotterdam when the fuel tank leaked in heavy weather on Thursday morning. That happened off the south coast of the island of Newfoundland.

About 30,000 liters of fuel ended up in the hold, after which the crew pumped the resulting oil-water mixture overboard. The leak has now been repaired. No one was injured.

Measures

The Canadian authorities speak of an “accidental pollution incident”. They’ve ordered the Alaskaborg to head for the port of the provincial capital of St. John’s.

Wagenborg says in a statement to Canadian media that he is fully cooperating with the authorities. The company also promises to take measures to limit further environmental damage.
