Dutch shared bicycles also to Barcelona and Vienna | NOW

The Dutch Swapfiets shared service is once again expanding to a number of new European cities. The company’s bicycles are now on the road in Barcelona and from next month that will also be the case in Vienna, Lyon, Nantes, Strasbourg and Toulouse, Swapfiets reports Tuesday.

Swapfiets was already active in Paris and the demand there is so encouraging that the company is also going to try it in other cities in France. With Spain and Austria added, the number of countries in which the Dutch company is active comes to eight.

The Swapfiets business model is actually in between renting and selling bicycles. For 15 euros per month you get a bicycle at the company. It will be yours, unlike, for example, a public transport bicycle, but if you have a flat tire, you can immediately exchange it for another one.

Swapfiets says it has the tide. Cities have been investing a lot of money in good cycling infrastructure in recent years, and the corona pandemic has accelerated that process. In large cities such as Barcelona and Vienna, people are cycling more and more often, says CEO Marc de Vries: “We believe that we can really contribute to making these cities more livable.”

220,000 people now have a subscription with Swapfiets.
