The Dutch sailors Maxime Jonker and Marit Bouwmeester reported themselves at the top of the rankings on Sunday on the third day of the World Championships in the Ilca 6 class. Jonker is fourth and Bouwmeester occupies eighth position.
The sailors in Mar del Plata, Argentina, are divided into two groups due to the large number of participants. Bouwmeester finished first in her first race of the day and Jonker came third in her group. The planned second race was canceled due to a threat of thunder.
The other Dutch participants, Mirthe Akkerman and Roos Wind, are 20th and 42nd respectively. The Danish Anne-Marie Rindom is in the lead.
Olympic qualification is at stake for the Dutch sailors at the World Championships. There is only one Ilca 6 class ticket available for the Paris Games. Four-time world champion Bouwmeester won silver, gold and bronze successively at the last three Olympic Games. The World Cup lasts until January 10.
“We really have a super strong Dutch team in Mar del Plata. They had a difficult start to the event, but that’s how sailing can be,” says national coach Arnoud Hummel.
“I’m sure whoever wins this selection will definitely be a medal candidate at the Olympic Games and could also end up on the podium of a World Cup.”
