After the restoration, the 120-year-old carriage will be on display at the Amsterdam City Museum from September next year.

The carriage, which King Willem Alexander usually used once a year to attend the opening session of the autumn parliamentary session in September, has received mixed reviews in recent years. In the carriage’s paintings, certain circles see symbols of racism and slavery.

The paintings, entitled “Dedication to the Colonies”, depict a white woman on a throne, handing out gifts to blacks at her feet.

Willem Alexander has stated that these drawings will not be removed during the restoration, as they are part of the Dutch cultural heritage.

The Amsterdam City Museum has announced plans for a diverse exhibition on the history of the carriage, which will also address racism and colonialism.

The carriage was a gift from the people of Amsterdam to Queen Wilhelmina in 1898 in honor of the ascension to the throne.
