Retailers achieved more than 4 percent more turnover in March than in the same month last year. The growth is mainly due to higher prices, as the total sales volume fell by 7 percent.
Shops selling food, beverages and tobacco saw turnover increase by 9.2 percent last month compared to a year ago, according to figures from Statistics Netherlands. The sales volume was almost 6 percent lower. The turnover of the supermarkets was more than 10 percent higher and that of the specialty stores rose by 0.4 percent.
Average turnover at non-food companies fell by 1.5 percent. The shops selling furniture and home furnishings, drugstores and shops selling consumer electronics achieved higher turnover. Stores selling recreational goods, clothing stores, shoe stores and stores selling do-it-yourself items and kitchens and flooring showed a decrease.
Statistics Netherlands also reports that online turnover increased by more than 3 percent. Web shops that only sell online saw sales increase by more than 9 percent. Stores that sell both physically and online achieved more than 4 percent less turnover.
