In more and more parts of the Netherlands, rats and mice no longer die from toxic pesticides. The resistance of the animals differs per region. This is apparent from research by the Knowledge and Advice Center for Animal Pests (KAD) and Wageningen University & Research, which was carried out on behalf of the Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management.
Door NU.nl/ANPMore than 2,000 rodents were examined in the study. Most of them were brown rats and house mice.

Of the latter group, 38 percent turned out to be resistant to poison. Of the brown rats studied, 17 percent were less sensitive to toxic pesticides.

These figures are national averages. The researchers see differences at a regional level. In some regions only resistant rats were found, in other regions none at all. The same applies to mice studied.

The consequence of the resistance is that the rodents can be controlled less effectively. State Secretary Vivianne Heijnen (Infrastructure and Water Management) sent the research report to the House of Representatives this week and emphasizes the importance of monitoring, prevention and control without chemical agents.

The rules will be tightened up from January 2023. Then only certified companies may use chemical agents to control rats and mice.
