UTRECHTDutch children between 0 and 6 know little about the situation in the Middle East. According to the famous Utrecht educator Gerard Zilver, this is largely due to the parents.

“The numbers don’t lie,” said the educator. “More than 92 percent of Dutch schoolchildren cannot explain in a few sentences what is currently happening in the Middle East. At the same time, they know a lot about toys and Bob the Builder. It’s obvious that children are paying too much attention to isolated, less important issues.”

According to Zilver, the parents are largely to blame: “The problem is that children are hardly read in the evening about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and the spread of violence to Lebanon and Iran. Very few parents sit with the child on the edge of the bed with the newspaper before going to sleep. Too often, parents prefer a simple read about Woezel & Pip and The Hungarian Caterpillar. That’s really nice and easy, but it’s creating a whole generation of kids who can’t explain the situation in the Middle East.”
