Dutch participant Joost set to perform in Eurovision Song Contest second semi-final on May 9 in Malmö

Joost will perform in the second semi-final of the Eurovision Song Contest this year. The Dutch participant will take the stage on Thursday, May 9, in the second half of the show.

The Netherlands will meet Austria, Norway and Estonia, among others, in the second semi-final, it was announced during the draw on Tuesday evening. For the first time since 2015, the Netherlands is again in the semi-finals together with Belgium. The organization of the festival tries to use the draw to put neighboring countries that vote for each other a lot in the same pot, so that they have less chance of ending up in the same semi-final.

Just like last year, 37 countries are participating in the Eurovision Song Contest. Romania has dropped out, but Luxembourg has returned. Fifteen countries will participate in the first semi-final, ten of which will go to the final. Sixteen will participate in the second semi-final, six of whom will be eliminated.

Israel only participated in the draw that determines who will perform in which part of the semi-final. The country asked the European Broadcasting Union if it could perform in the second semi-final, because of a commemoration day in the country. The EBU agreed. In countries such as Iceland, Norway and Finland, protests are taking place against Israel’s participation because of the war in Gaza.

The exact starting order of the semi-finals will be determined by the show’s creators once all numbers are known. The number with which Joost represents the Netherlands will be announced at a later date.

Only televoting in semi-finals

Like every year, the ‘Big 5’ – France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom and Spain – do not have to participate in the semi-finals. These biggest spenders automatically qualify for the final, just like the winner of the year before – in this case Sweden.

Just like last year, only people at home will vote in the semi-finals. The professional jury only gets half of the say in the final.

The Eurovision Song Contest will take place this year in the Swedish city of Malmö, due to Loreen’s victory with the song Tattoo. The singer won for the second time last year, after having already collected the most points in 2012, with Euphoria.
