Valentijn knows more about Brobbey and Bergwijn: ‘I heard from Amsterdam…’

Steven Bergwijn and Brian Brobbey had been fit enough to make it to the Dutch national team’s second European Championship qualifier against Gibraltar (Tuesday). Valentijn Driessen stated this during the press conference on Tuesday in conversation with national coach Ronald Koeman. Both Ajax players dropped out on Monday after medical tests in Zeist.
“I heard from Amsterdam that Bergwijn and Brobbey could easily make it to the second match,” Driessen Koeman explains. “I am not aware of that,” answers the national coach. Driessen: “According to your medical staff, they wouldn’t be able to make it to the second match either?”
“If that had been the case, I don’t believe I would have kept them in the group,” said Koeman. “I don’t think players can be with a group for a week while they are not fit for the first match. I don’t think you are making the right choice within the group.”
To replace Brobbey, Koeman brought Thijs Dallinga into the group. “I think he was surprised. I saw him on TV. Then I tell him to keep his eyes open. These days there is enough time to sit down together.”
Koeman believes that Dallinga is developing well. “He plays in a strong competition. He also plays in Europe. He has scoring ability. It is clear that when you make a selection, you want to have the positions occupied twice. My preference for Wout (Weghorst, ed.) and Brobbey was and is there. But dropouts make you look further. Then he comes into the picture.”
Both Brobbey and Bergwijn were not fit enough for the upcoming international match during a medical examination in Zeist on Monday and were therefore withdrawn. Bergwijn was substituted after 66 minutes against Almere City, while Brobbey played the entire match. The latter provided two assists.
For Dallinga it is his debut in the selection of the Dutch national team. The center forward is in his second season at Toulouse. The French club took over Dallinga from Excelsior in 2022, where he won the top scorer title in the 2021/22 season in the Kitchen Champion Division with 32 goals in 37 competition matches.
