Dutch lawmakers propose installing monitoring box in cars of repeat traffic violators

A fatal traffic accident last month in Ede

NOS News

A majority in the House of Representatives is in favor of installing a monitoring box in the car of people who have committed several serious traffic violations, reports RTL News. With such a box, driving behavior can be monitored. The court would have to determine who qualifies.

If a motorist then makes another mistake, the driver’s license can be revoked. The Victim Support Fund comes up with the idea for a monitoring box with the support of the Central Bureau for Driving Exams (CBR). The fund hopes that this will reduce the number of road deaths by a quarter per year. That’s about 150 deaths.

According to the director of the fund, a small group of perpetrators often go wrong again. Drivers who regularly go over the line will have their driving license back when their temporary driving ban is over. Then they go back on the road and no one is watching them anymore, is the conclusion of the director.

Trial

Member of Parliament Koerhuis (VVD) asks the cabinet to amend the road traffic act so that the system can be introduced. According to RTL News, D66 member Van Ginneken supports the coalition partner’s plans, but believes that a judge should determine who gets such a box and for how long.

PvdA and PVV also support the proposal. And the ministers Harbers for Transport and Yesilgöz of Justice have already hinted that they want to implement the plan.

The monitoring box is still being developed, writes RTL. A trial will start in the summer with twenty motorists driving around with it. The device must register speeds and traffic violations and can function as a lock for the car. After the test, it will be determined whether the box can be imported.
