Dutch invention effective in combating malaria

These EaveTubes, invented by a Wageningen company, are able to reduce the spread of malaria among people by tens of percent. The results of a large-scale study in Ivory Coast have been published in the leading science magazine The Lancet.

Hundreds of thousands of children

Malaria is one of the most common causes of death for young children in Africa. Hundreds of thousands of children under the age of five die every year from the disease, which is transmitted by mosquitoes.

The ventilation pipe is placed under the eaves of a house, which is otherwise sealed, so that the mosquitoes can only enter the house through the pipe. In that tube, they are exposed to an enormous amount of insecticides, which can even kill resistant mosquitoes. An additional advantage is that the rest of the house remains free of poison.

The research into the effectiveness of the EaveTubes was funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
