The Dutch industry has had a tough year. The number of bankruptcies in 2023 will be 270, the largest number in five years.
This is reported by statistics agency CBS. Refineries and chemical companies saw their turnover decline the most: by 19.1 percent compared to a year earlier. Turnover in the paper and printing industries fell by almost 10 percent.
These are the same sectors where selling prices fell in 2023. Prices in the petroleum industry, chemical industry and plastics processing industry for customers were almost 13 percent lower than a year earlier.
Output prices in the food industry actually rose by almost 6 percent. Wood and building materials also became more expensive, by about 9.4 percent. However, turnover also fell in these industrial sectors.
On average, turnover in Dutch industry plummeted by 5.6 percent. In the last quarter of 2023, 9.6 percent less money was spent in industry compared to 2022. It was the third quarter in which industrial turnover decreased compared to a year earlier.

Stocks from corona years
Production was lower throughout the year than a year earlier, which is in line with other European countries. Producers had difficulty getting rid of their large stocks, which were left over from the time of the corona pandemic.
CBS also asks producers about their expectations for the future. Not even one in twenty entrepreneurs expects to generate more turnover in the first quarter of 2024, which is where we are now.
