Dutch Ice Rinks Open as Skating Season Begins

Jan 8, 2024 at 9:42 AM Update: 34 minutes ago

The first ice rinks in the Netherlands opened their doors to skating fans on Monday morning. This concerns the ice rinks in Doorn, De Lier and Ammerstol.

There has been a lot of skating going on at the Doornsche Ice Club since 8:00 am. According to a volunteer, there is a beautiful ice surface and about 150 enthusiasts make their first meters on the ice. “Many people come to skate for work.” He hopes that the sun will not break through for a while, because then the track will have to close again.

The volunteers of the Doornsche Ice Club were already making preparations on Saturday. For example, they placed rugs in the canteen, so that people can enter there with skates. They also set up mopping machines. During the night from Sunday to Monday, volunteer teams were active to prepare the ice rink.

In De Lier, South Holland, the skating rink opened an hour later than in Doorn. According to chairman Wim van der Berg of the Hard Gaat-ie ice skating association, spraying has been carried out since 7 p.m. on Sunday and there is now a beautiful ice surface.

“There are now mainly adults, the children are at school. But I expect big crowds this afternoon,” says Van der Berg. According to the chairman, the weather looks good for the time being. “It’s cloudy, so the sun won’t do much harm. I’m confident.”

The ice rink is also open in Ammerstol, in the Krimpenerwaard.

More jobs open in the coming days

The Royal Dutch Skating Federation (KNSB) expects that more sprayed rinks will open in the coming days. According to sports participation manager Jurre Trouw, courses are often opened first in Doorn and De Lier.

In recent days, the 450 ice skating clubs affiliated with the KNSB have made plenty of preparations, says Trouw. They mowed the grass and cleared the lanes of leaves. “We now have to wait until the lanes freeze over.” According to him, the ice masters are responsible for a safe ice floor. “They assess whether skating can take place.”
