Dutch Ice Hockey Players Achieve Record Victory Against Thailand at Olympic Qualifying Tournament

Dec 16, 2023 at 10:07 PM Update: 4 hours ago

The Dutch ice hockey players won against Thailand at the second Olympic qualifying tournament (OKT) on Saturday with a record score. The match in Tilburg ended 23-1 and that is the biggest victory ever for the Dutch team.

The record was 0-19 and dated from 1978. The Dutch men won against Spain in Las Palmas at the time. In the Ice Sports Center, the Dutch team comfortably exceeded that mark, although it initially did not look like it would become a record.

After the first two of a total of three periods, national coach Doug Mason’s team led 13-1. In the first period the Netherlands scored six times against the weak Thai team and in the second period they scored seven times.

The only Thai goal was a hard shot by Papan Thanakroekkiat in the first period. Dutch goalie Martijn Oosterwijk had no answer to that.

At a score of 13-1, the record score was already announced. The score then quickly rose and when Jonne de Bonth made it 21-1, it was clear that a new record was on the way. Danny Stempher scored two goals and provided seven assists. De Bonth and Marvin Timmer each scored three times.

The Netherlands won 8-2 against Georgia on Friday. The Dutch team must come first in this group with only Spain as their opponent to advance to the third qualifying tournament. This will be followed by a decisive OKT for a ticket for the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan. The Netherlands will play against Spain on Monday.
