Dutch Holidaymakers Hit by Storm in Italy Make Journey Home by Bus

Emergency workers from the ANWB repaired cars this weekend from Dutch holidaymakers who were hit by severe weather near Lake Garda in Italy. Ten cars are now ready to drive back to the Netherlands.

Hailstones the size of tennis balls fell around Lake Garda at the beginning of this week. Cars, campers and caravans were so damaged that they could no longer be driven.

To help the Dutch tourists, the ANWB sent three mechanics with material for emergency repairs to Northern Italy. They get help from two colleagues who happened to be on holiday in the area. “They couldn’t resist lending a helping hand,” says an ANWB spokesperson.

The aid workers have car windows, roof hatches for caravans, plexiglass and tear-resistant foil with them. They are expected to be able to repair about eighty to one hundred vehicles. They think they will spend a week on this, says the ANWB spokesperson to the ANP news agency.

Local garages too busy

The ANWB decided to carry out repairs on site because garages near Lake Garda cannot cope with the work. Moreover, the tourists can then go home with their own car.

About 350 affected holidaymakers returned from Italy by bus this morning. This transport was arranged by the emergency centers SOS International, ANWB, Eurocross, VHD and Allianz. The cars, campers, caravans and belongings of these tourists are brought back to the Netherlands at another time.
