The Orange took another sensitive blow on Friday with the biggest home defeat ever. That match, also played in Eindhoven, ended in 2-7.
On Monday, the Netherlands showed that it had learned a lesson from this. After the first quarter it was already 3-1. Timo Boers made it 1-0 and after Australian Nathan Ephraums equalized, Tjep Hoedemakers and Duco Telgenkamp also scored.
In the second quarter, Jeremy Hayward brought back the tension (3-2), after which Telgenkamp and Boers – with hits spread over the last two quarters – determined the final score.
The Orange needed the win, as only three wins were won in the previous seven Pro League games. Improvement was already shown on Saturday by beating leader India 3-2.
The victory over Australia puts the Netherlands in the middle of the group, which consists of nine countries. The Orange has played much fewer duels than the top teams. A double confrontation with Spain will follow on Friday and next Monday.
