The Dutch health service asks Sinterklaas and his helpers this year not to scatter sweets at the solemn entrances later this year, to give as few hands as possible to children and instead to wave as much as possible.

A spokesperson for the health service confirms in the Dutch media that this is a national advice. “The grabbing in bags and handing out candy through the hands ensures that you come into contact with viruses faster and can therefore get corona. And we want to prevent infectious diseases from spreading,” a spokesperson told RTL Nieuws.
“Wash your hands well beforehand and do nothing else in between. Or wash your hands again after, for example, you’ve had a break or gone to the toilet,” is the advice to the Piets.
Many municipalities are still struggling with this year’s arrival. Mayor Sharon Dijksma of Utrecht announced this week that, despite previous reports, the public will not be asked for a QR code.
