The Dutch handball players won their first match of the second group stage at the World Cup on Wednesday. The Dutch team was a size too big for Brazil in Frederikshavn, Denmark: 35-27.
From the first minute, the Netherlands were lord and master. In no time, national coach Per Johansson’s team took a 5-0 lead, after which victory was no longer in danger for the number five in the world rankings. Brazil is tenth in that ranking.
Dione Housheer was one of the standouts on the Dutch side with six goals. Lois Abbingh managed to find the net five times. Larissa Nüsser, Estavana Polman, Nikita van Der Vliet and Bo van Wetering all scored four times. Goalkeeper Yara ten Holte was named player of the match.
The Netherlands had convincingly qualified for the second group stage of the World Cup in Scandinavia. The Dutch won the group with victories over Argentina, Congo and the Czech Republic. Because Argentina and the Czech Republic also reached the second group stage, the Netherlands was allowed to take four points.
After the victory over Brazil, the Dutch team is still undefeated at the World Cup. The Netherlands is therefore in the lead in group 4 with the same number of points as Spain. The first two countries in the final rankings qualify for the quarter-finals.
The Netherlands will face Ukraine on Friday. The second group stage ends on Sunday with a crack against Spain, the country against which the Dutch team won the World Cup final in 2019. That resulted in the only handball world title in Dutch history.
Group 4
