The 34-year-old native of Perth Ricciado paid for the accident in the afternoon with Oscar Piastri from McLaren driving in front of him. “An X-ray confirmed that he had suffered a fractured metacarpal bone in his left hand. This injury will not allow him to continue his duties,” the Alpha Tauri team said in a statement.
Ricciardo has completed only two races in the Alpha Tauri team so far, after replacing the unsuccessful Dutchman Nyck de Vries in the cockpit during the season. The experienced Australian will now be replaced by 21-year-old Lawson, who fulfills the role of a test rider in the team. He will become the tenth native of New Zealand to race in F1. The last was Brendon Hartley in 2018.

Verstappen has won ten of the 12 races this year and leads the World Championship standings by 125 points ahead of teammate Sergio Pérez. The Mexican finished fourth in the first practice, seventh in the second.
