Daniel Ricciardo has to do without the start in the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday. The Australian injured himself.
Ricciardo, who has been with Alpha Tauri since the Hungarian Grand Prix, crashed into the track barrier in the second free practice session in a curious incident with McLaren driver Oscar Piastri and then complained of pain in his hand.
Two pilots crash, Ricciardo complains of pain
After Piastri lost the rear of his car and crashed into the barriers in turn three, the banked corner, yellow warning lights came on. They apparently distracted the Ricciardo driving behind, so the Alpha Tauri pilot drove himself at high speed into the Tecpro barriers at the edge of the track, thus avoiding the collision with the Piastri car. The winner of eight Formula 1 races still had his hands on the steering wheel and complained of pain immediately after the impact. “Damn, my hand,” was the first radio message from the 34-year-old.
metacarpal fracture
After the incident, the training session was interrupted with a red flag until the cars could be transported away. When getting out of his car, it was evident that the Australian was trying not to strain his left hand.
Ricciardo attended the circuit’s medical center for an initial check-up and the Australian was reportedly taken to a hospital for further checks.
And they confirmed the fears. The Australian suffered a broken metacarpal and has to pause with it. The 34-year-old is represented by Red Bull talent Liam Lawson.
