The Dutch government is going to put the brakes on again, to keep a grip on the number of corona infections in the country. According to various media, the catering industry will have to close again at midnight, and strict rules will be imposed for multi-day events. Prime Minister Mark Rutte will reportedly announce this on Friday evening during a press conference at 7 p.m.

The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment reported 5,475 new positive corona tests on Thursday, the highest number since May 14. A week earlier, on July 1, there were only 826 new cases. That means the number of positive tests has almost doubled in a week. Such a rapid increase has never happened before.
The Dutch government is therefore intervening: the relaxations that were approved barely two weeks ago, especially for the catering industry, are now being reversed. For example, according to various Dutch media, cafes, clubs and discos should close again at midnight from Saturday. The government would also like to see an end to Testing for Access in the catering industry, discotheques and at festivals. Testing for access should only be allowed at so-called “placed events”, where people are in their place.
Prime Minister Mark Rutte and Health Minister Hugo de Jonge would announce these new measures at a press conference on Friday evening at 7 p.m. The measures would come into effect on Friday evening, and will apply at least until August 13.
