Dutch girl stabbed in Sweden probably random victim | Abroad

The Dutch girl who was stabbed on Thursday afternoon in Gothenburg, Sweden, was “probably a random victim”, according to the police. The suspect is known to the police.

The 10-year-old girl was stabbed in a park in the center of the city around 12:30 p.m. She was seriously injured. Her 70-year-old grandmother injured her arm while trying to protect the girl. The girl was in Sweden visiting her Swedish grandparents.

According to the police, the 35-year-old suspect and the girl are not known to each other. Presumably she was a random victim. The police do not assume that it is a terrorist act, but are continuing to investigate.

The suspect was arrested immediately after the incident. He was overpowered by bystanders who intervened and worked him to the ground, local media report. The man is suspected of attempted murder.

According to Swedish broadcaster SVT has the man previously been convicted of theft and assault. He has served a three-year prison sentence for this.
