AMSTERDAM – Kees Rijvers, a former Dutch football representative and later coach of the national team, died at the age of 97. His death was reported by PSV Eindhoven, which he led to victory in the UEFA Cup (today’s European League) in 1978.

As a midfielder, Rijvers played 33 games for the Netherlands and scored ten goals. He could not play for the national team for several years after he transferred from Breda to Saint-Étienne and was among the professionals who were not allowed to represent at that time. He won the league title with the French club in 1957 and the cup five years later.

In the role of coach, he also helped Eindhoven to three championship titles and two triumphs in the Dutch Cup. Rijvers led the national team from 1981 to 1984 and gave the first chance in the national team to later great stars Frank Rijkaard, Marc van Basten and Ruud Gullit.
