The government has decided to strengthen the protection of Bulgarian airspace. The proposal was submitted by Prime Minister Kiril Petkov, and the decision itself was made on March 8 and was published late this afternoon.
“From March 4 to June 24, 2022 on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria to deploy forces and resources of the Air Force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands consisting of up to 8 aircraft and up to 200 servicemen,” reads the decision of the Council of Ministers.
In the period from April 1 to May 31, 2022 inclusive to strengthen the protection of the airspace of the Republic of Bulgaria by performing tasks of the Air Force of the Republic of Bulgaria together with forces and means of the Air Force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands consisting of two aircraft on duty on the territory of the country, and they also perform the tasks specified in the Permanent Plan for Air and Missile Defense in the NATO Integrated System (NATINAMDS) “, the document says.
Joint actions will take place under several conditions. The Air Force of the Republic of Bulgaria continues to fulfill its commitments to be on duty at NATINAMDS without change.
The missions of the duty aircraft of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under item 2 shall be carried out according to the plans and procedures of NATINAMDS in accordance with the applicable documents of NATO and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
When participating in the protection of the airspace of the Republic of Bulgaria, the duty aircraft of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are limited to performing tasks of occupying an air duty zone, performing interception of air targets and visual identification, interrogation, escort and intervention.
The use of weapons, including warning fire, by aircraft on duty in the Kingdom of the Netherlands shall not be permitted. Each Party shall bear its own resources.
Instructs the Minister of Defense to take the necessary actions for the preparation and signing of the necessary documents and to organize the activities for the implementation of the joint protection of the airspace.
Here is part of the decision of the Council of Ministers:
1. In item 2 of Decision № 24 of the Council of Ministers of 2022 on the implementation of the measures for ensuring the security of NATO allies and the tasks in the NATO Permanent Plan for Air and Missile Defense, including strengthening the protection of the airspace of NATO The Republic of Bulgaria by performing tasks of the Air Force of the Republic of Bulgaria together with forces and means of the Kingdom of Spain and to determine the restrictions for the Spanish side in their joint actions, the words “until April 5, 2022.” are replaced by “until April 15, 2022.”
2. In the period from 1 April to 31 May 2022 inclusive to strengthen the protection of the airspace of the Republic of Bulgaria by performing tasks of the Air Force of the Republic of Bulgaria together with forces and means of the Air Force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands consisting of 2 aircraft in round-the-clock duty on the territory of the country, as they perform the tasks specified in the Permanent Plan for Air and Missile Defense in the NATO Integrated System (NATINAMDS).
3. For the implementation of the actions under item 2 in the period from March 4 to June 24, 2022 on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria to deploy forces and resources of the Air Force of the Kingdom of the Netherlands consisting of up to 8 aircraft and up to 200 servicemen.

4. Joint actions shall be carried out under the following conditions:
4.1. The Air Force of the Republic of Bulgaria continues to fulfill its commitments to be on duty at NATINAMDS without change.
4.2. The missions of the duty aircraft of the Kingdom of the Netherlands under item 2 shall be carried out according to the plans and procedures of NATINAMDS in accordance with the applicable documents of NATO and the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
4.3. When participating in the protection of the airspace of the Republic of Bulgaria, the duty aircraft of the Kingdom of the Netherlands are limited to performing tasks of occupying an air duty zone, performing interception of air targets and visual identification, interrogation, escort and intervention.
4.4. The use of weapons, including warning fire, by aircraft on duty in the Kingdom of the Netherlands is not permitted.
4.5. Each of the parties shall bear the costs of its own forces and resources participating in the activities under items 2 and 3.
5. Instructs the Minister of Defense to take the necessary actions for the preparation and signing of the necessary documents and to organize the activities for the implementation of the joint protection of the airspace.
