Only a few Dutch people will have noticed that there is currently a lot of unrest among the farmers in the country. They strongly disagree with new government policy that should significantly reduce nitrogen emissions. Due to the distrust of the government, more and more farmers are turning to cryptocurrenciesas of course bitcoin (BTC).
The peasant protest
The farmers’ protest has been going on in the Netherlands for several weeks now and it doesn’t seem like the farmers are just surrendering for the time being. In June of this year, the cabinet announced that farmers will be allowed to emit much less nitrogen, and in some cases this means that farmers have to stop.
The farmers also seem inspired by the Canadian Freedom Truckers who also protested against the government in Canada a while back. At the time, heavy vehicles were also used to flatten certain parts of the country. There is another similarity between the Truckers and the Farmers. They both seem very enamored with bitcoin.
Farmers seize bitcoin
This has in large part to do with the fact that bitcoin is, at least ostensibly, beyond the reach of the government. It seems a lot more anonymous and there is no central authority that can stop the making of a transaction, for example. For farmers, who turn against the government, this is therefore a logical choice.
According to Boris van de Ven, the CEO of Blammo Media, farmers are trying to get financially out of reach of the government on a large scale. In a interview met Bitcoin Magazine he clearly sees that more and more farmers think this way.
“I was surprised by the farmers I spoke to that most of them have heard of bitcoin and are aware, very aware of the issues they face. Farmers are financially savvy and understand the solution that bitcoin brings.”
