Dutch edition ‘Wilfried’ stops after four songs

After a good year and four issues, the Dutch edition of the quarterly magazine has ended Wilfried. The cooperative behind the magazine, which, in addition to the French-speaking Wilfried also the sports magazine Eddy is in bad financial records. Only the French-speaking Wilfried will continue to exist.

The cooperative behind the French-speaking Wilfried financially in bad shape. According to the French-language newspapers, 170,000 euros would be needed to guarantee the survival of their flagship. It is already certain that the cooperatives will pull the plug from the Dutch-language edition of Wilfried. The magazine brought ‘slow journalism’ with a view to the entire country.

In an email to the employees of the magazine, editor-in-chief Pascal Verbeken wrote that the lack of resources had been an issue for some time. It was like ‘magic’ every song, as Verbeken describes it. ‘We were always able to hide how extremely low our working budget was, a small fraction of the resources that other magazines have available,’ he writes.

However, there is no question of resentment towards the Wilfried founders, emphasizes Verbeken. ‘Choices have been made, as it is called.’ He does, however, think it’s a ‘pity’ that the magazine is ending. “With a little more time, we might have managed to break even.”
