Atalanta defeated Liverpool in the first leg at Anfield in the quarter-finals of the Europa League. The visitors won no less than 0-3 against a poor Liverpool. This ended a run of 33 unbeaten home matches for the Reds.
AS Roma (0-1 against AC Milan), Bayer Leverkusen (2-0 against West Ham United) and Benfica (2-1 against Olympique Marseille) also started with a victory in the quarter-finals. The returns are next week.
Duel of the Dutch
No fewer than four Dutchmen were at the kick-off at Anfield: Virgil van Dijk and Cody Gakpo at Liverpool and Teun Koopmeiners and Marten de Roon at Atalanta. In addition, Ryan Gravenberch (Liverpool), Mitchel Bakker and Hans Hateboer (Atalanta) started on the bench.
