Pro ShotsVan Peer screams after his win against Woodhouse
NOS Sport•vandaag, 16:06
While Berry van Peer battled ‘darteritis’ in 2017 and could not smile at all, the darts player from Roosendaal has a big smile on his face after today. In his World Cup debut, he defeated world number 33 Luke Woodhouse 3-2 in sets.
And that was extra nice. Because Van Peer also had some physical discomfort this week, he said afterwards. The Brabander had fallen down the stairs and bruised two ribs, which meant he could train less in recent days.
In addition, there was also a mental story surrounding the Dutchman. Six years ago things went wrong at Van Peer. He was unable to get an arrow out of his hand at the Grand Slam of Darts. Darteritus took a serious form. This condition causes a blockage in the head, causing the movement they have been performing for years to suddenly no longer work.
But now the arrows more than flew out of his hand. He immediately won the first set, much to his relief. “Yes, there was a lot of energy today. I’m really looking forward to it and it’s paying off,” he said afterwards.
Van Peer wanted to get Woodhouse back after defeats: ‘Nice motivation’
But Woodhouse did not simply give in. The Englishman was sharper in the second set and Woodhouse leveled the score in five legs.
Van Peer then proved once again that his mental problems are completely over. He won the third set and managed to get two arrows in the fourth set to decide the match. But they were lost, a fifth set had to decide.
“Those arrows could have gone in, they were also close, but it just didn’t work out. But I knew that I was better in scoring in this match, so you shouldn’t think too much about those missed arrows and just get over it. That happened also.”
Missed five match arrows, but still great joy
That was right. In the fifth set, Van Peer initially missed three arrows for the match, but to his great joy the fourth was still hit.
For the first time in his career, the 27-year-old Roosendaler managed to win a match against Woodhouse. He failed to do that the previous two times. “I thought: I have to get him back. That was a nice motivation for today.”
In the second round, Van Peer will face another Englishman, Josh Rock. The Dutchman is full of confidence. “I threw well today. I can continue to build on this”
7 Dutchmen still in the tournament
Due to Van Peer’s victory, there are now seven Dutch players left in the tournament.
These are Michael van Gerwen, Danny Noppert, Dirk van Duijvenbode, Raymond van Barneveld, Richard Veenstra, Jermaine Wattimena and Van Peer.
Danny Noppert will play against Englishman Scott Williams on Thursday evening.
