Dutch consumers hardly made any more online purchases in the third quarter. Much less clothing and electronics were purchased. We did spend considerably more money on holiday bookings than last year.
In the months of July, August and September, consumers spent 7.4 billion euros on online purchases, 4 percent more than a year earlier, according to research by GfK. The number of purchases grew much less rapidly at 1 percent.
It is striking that we skimp on products. We bought 2 percent less of these than in the third quarter of 2022. Clothing (13 percent less purchased) and electronics (5 percent less) in particular end up in the online shopping cart less often.
Consumers are more eager to pay for holiday bookings. We spent 32 percent more on package holidays and 20 percent more on individual airline tickets and accommodation. According to the researchers, this is mainly due to last-minute bookings for the autumn holidays.
Yet it is not the case that we go on holiday that often. There are also other reasons for this extra spending, says Marlene ten Ham of Thuiswinkel.org. “We see that online spending on travel is increasing faster than the number of online travel purchases (6 percent more). This may be due to inflation, but also because people are opting for more expensive trips than before.”
The researchers see that we are increasingly finding foreign online stores. We often cross the border digitally for plane tickets and stays abroad, but also for toys and clothing.
