The Dutch branch of donut chain Dunkin’ is bankrupt. Co-owner Roberto Fava confirmed this to the ANP news agency.

It is unclear what the reason for the bankruptcy is. The curator tells De Telegraaf that the approximately fifty shops will remain open for the time being.

The first Dunkin’ Donuts location opened in Amsterdam in March 2017. Franchisees of the chain were Fava and his financier Nabil Besali, who together also owned several ‘Nutella shops’ in Amsterdam. They also had the rights to use the Dunkin’ brand name in Belgium. After that, about seventy other businesses opened.

Last year, the Van der Valk catering family acquired a majority of the shares. Fava and Besali’s son held a small portion of the shares. Van der Valk International then stated that it wanted to significantly expand the company with another sixty stores within five years, but several stores have closed since then.

It was the second attempt to get Dunkin’ off the ground in the Netherlands. Five locations opened in the 1990s, all of which closed in 2000.
