Dutch Band Disgruntled After Their Song Was Chosen As Song For World Cup Broadcasts: ‘It’s Not Nice To Earn’ | Show

During the broadcasts of the Dutch national team’s World Cup, our northern neighbors regularly play the song “This is the Moment” by the band Son Mieux from The Hague. The Dutch broadcaster (NOS) chose the song as background music for the short preview and retrospective snippets of the Orange football duels. And this brought discomfort to the band from The Hague.

Son Mieux has been around since 2015, but only really broke through the Dutch charts this summer. Their single ‘Multicolor’ reached number four in the Dutch Top 40. The song was the most played on Dutch radio for weeks. Previously, the band was also the house band for six days in ‘Studio Tokio’, the evening program of NOS on NPO 1 in connection with the Olympic Games.

During this World Cup, Son Mieux is again assigned a role by the broadcaster, but with a number in retrospect and anticipations around the Dutch national team. Their new single ‘This Is The Moment’ can often be heard during this World Cup on the channel, and this creates unease among artists from The Hague.

“Let’s start by saying that the child in us who once played football in the schoolyard finds this a great honor,” the pop band’s statement began on social media. “Unfortunately, this World Cup is only taking place in a country where the decisions of the ruling power are diametrically opposed to everything we believe in. This led to the necessary conversations with us, where we asked ourselves what we can or should do with this.

Compensation Fund

Son Mieux brought this idea to Amnesty International, the human rights organization which is committed to improving the situation in Qatar, host country of this World Cup. The band asks everyone to sign Amnesty’s petition en masse, calling for a compensation fund for migrant workers and surviving relatives for the suffering they have suffered.

Furthermore, the band from The Hague wants to go one step further. “As it doesn’t feel right to make any money from this as a band, we will be donating any proceeds we receive for the use of our track on TV directly to Amnesty. So that the money we could make from this can be used to hopefully improve the situation in Qatar and also to support Amnesty in all the work they do.”

His best

Son Mieux is once again inviting its fans to sign the petition and also to donate if you can save some money. “So that hopefully one day we will wake up to a world where sport can provide connection and enjoyment. And Holland can win another World Cup which we are all happy about,” said the band, closing the statement with “One Love”.
