Direct speech: “The Netherlands must seriously fear war and our society must prepare for it.”

Details: According to the general, The Hague should follow the example of Sweden, Finland and the Baltic countries, because they border the Russian Federation or are close to it, therefore they are better prepared for the outbreak of war.

“The Netherlands must understand that the whole society must be prepared for the possibility that something will go wrong. We should not think that our safety is guaranteed just because we are 1,500 kilometers away,” Wijnen said, adding that The civilian population must have supplies of food and drinking water in case of emergencies.

The top general warned that the Russian Federation continues to become stronger, so a strong army is needed as a deterrent.

“There is only one language that Russia understands, and that is the language of a strong army,” he said, emphasizing the importance of the country addressing its military personnel shortage.

Vainen indicated that he has high expectations from the one-year voluntary service initiative for youth, which was introduced after a similar program in Sweden. The top general hopes to attract two to three thousand young people every year, a third of whom are likely to choose a career in the army, and a third will become reservists.

Background:

  • President of Moldova Maia Sandu emphasized the importance of supporting Ukraine against a full-scale Russian invasion, since the Russian Federation can spread aggression to other countries.
  • Before this, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine noted that any concessions to Russia will mean only an expansion of aggression in the future.
  • Previously, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic Jan Lipavsky statedthat the main challenge for Prague is to keep Russia as far away from the Czech borders as possible.
