Düsseldorf State Parliament Saves Energy by 10% and Plans to Go Climate-neutral by 2030

Düsseldorf (dpa/lnw) – The Düsseldorf state parliament has saved 10 percent electricity and 20 percent district heating since last summer. This was the result of an analysis of the consumption figures from the beginning of July to the end of March, said a spokesman on request. The state parliament is so satisfied with this that almost all measures are to be retained. The energy-saving measures were introduced as a result of Russia’s war against Ukraine.

In the state parliament, among other things, the lights go out earlier, monitors are on less and motion sensors have been installed in corridors. The heating in corridors, stairwells, the foyers and in the lobby was switched off. In addition, the heating was – as required by law – turned down to 19 degrees. In the offices, the instantaneous water heaters were permanently removed.

“The state parliament’s sustainability management will examine the building for further energy-saving potential,” said the spokesman. The building areas that are still missing are to be converted to LED lighting. In addition, solar systems are planned on the flat roofs of the state parliament. The state parliament wants to be climate-neutral by 2030.

Last year, against the background of the energy policy situation, the state parliament decided on extensive measures to save energy. This includes, among other things, reducing the switch-on times of the information displays on the facade of the parliament building and the interior lighting. In addition, the basic lighting in the plenary hall is switched off every day at 6 p.m. Motion detectors for the lighting were installed in the corridors.

An analysis of energy consumption for the period July 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023 showed that electricity consumption was reduced by 10 percent and 20 percent less district heating was used. Some of the measures were not implemented until later, so that the effects could not yet be fully recorded.

With regard to the targeted climate neutrality of the state parliament, almost all measures are to be retained and regularly reviewed. The sustainability management of the state parliament will examine the building for further energy saving potential.

In the medium term, the areas of the building that are still missing will also be converted to LED lighting and a concept for the installation of photovoltaic systems on the flat roofs of the state parliament building will be implemented.
