The ART Giants started their journey home without any points in their luggage

The ART Giants team traveled north for the second leg against the Itzehoe Eagles in the BARMER 2. Basketball Bundesliga ProB on Saturday (January 30th). After the defeat in the first leg, they wanted revenge, which just failed. The Düsseldorf team lost 87:90 in the second place in the table.

Revenge in Itzehoe

Itzehoe is ProB last year’s champion and made this clear from the start. They got off to a better start and used their physical superiority (10: 2). But the team of Giants coach Kevin Magdowski wanted revenge for the overtime defeat from the first leg. After an early break by Magdowski and a tip-in dunking by Quadre Lollis Jr., the Düsseldorf team got better into the game. An important player was Hasan Demirbas, who made the backup for his teammate Dennis Mavin. The scoreboard showed a narrow lead at the end of the first quarter (18:19).

20 year old Hasan Demirbas scored 19 points for his team

At the beginning of the second quarter, Hasan Demirbas sank two threes for the guests and implemented what he had discussed and trained with the coaches. Coach Magdowski was pleased to see how the young development player made the breakthrough on the floor. Demirbas could hardly be stopped offensive and dominated the second quarter (26:29). But Itzehoe did not give up and managed to cover the ART Giants’ zone defense before half-time (44:40).

During the half-time break, the coach announced that he would be more successful with the quick move to the basket. In the implementation, Lollis Jr. and Mark Gebhart secured important points for the Düsseldorf team. Both teams often fought body-hugging duels within the zone. Before the start of the last quarter, the Eagles were able to claim a close 69:66 lead for themselves.

Dennis Mavin tried a threesome in the last few seconds, unfortunately without success

It remained exciting and only the last few seconds of the final quarter should bring the decision. Both teams played very focused and there were changes in leadership almost every minute. When Itzehoe was leading with three points 13 seconds before the end of the game, Magdowski took a time-out (89:86). Both teams tried to take good throwing positions from their opponents by quick fouls. A final three-way attempt by Dennis Mavin failed shortly before the final siren and so there was a narrow defeat for the guests (90:87).

Conclusion of the trainer

“It was the difficult game expected in Itzehoe, which really dominated under the basket. It was very difficult for us to hold against it away from home, especially when you received a lot of easy points. In the end we also had the chance to turn the game in our favor. Nevertheless, after the game I told my team that I was very proud of their performance and their presence on the field. Overall, we’re still on the right track, ”said head coach Kevin Magdowski after the game.

So it goes on

On February 6th, the giants will receive the WWU Baskets Muenster at 7 p.m. in their home Comenius Hall. The next away game will be against LOK Bernau on February 13th (7pm).
