Düsseldorf, Cologne, and Co. possible venues at the Ice Hockey World Championship 2027
Düsseldorf The German Ice Hockey Federation is applying to host the 2027 World Championship. Possible venues are also Düsseldorf and Cologne.
The German Ice Hockey Federation is initially applying with the possible venues of Düsseldorf, Cologne, Mannheim and Munich to host the 2027 World Championship. Kazakhstan is also the only remaining competitor to apply. The DEB announced this on Wednesday. The World Championships will be awarded on May 27th during this year’s World Championships in Tampere and Riga.
Berlin and Krefeld, which had also applied as World Cup venues, are therefore out of the running. At the final presentation of the application in the spring, the DEB will only enter the race with two arenas. “The pre-selection of the venues was made exclusively on the basis of factual criteria,” said DEB President Peter Merten.
The DEB is also pursuing the idea of having the opening game again in a football arena. In 2010 at the penultimate home World Cup, the then world record game at Schalke caused a sensation. 77,803 spectators attended the opening game against the USA (2-1 after extra time). The last Ice Hockey World Championship in Germany took place in Cologne in 2017. At that time, France was co-host with Paris.
