Düsseldorf –
VfL Bochum and Holstein Kiel can today make their promotion to the Bundesliga perfect.
On the penultimate game day of the 2nd league, wins by leaders Bochum (63 points) at 1. FC Nürnberg and Second Kiel (62) at Karlsruher SC would remove all doubts. Even a draw would be enough for both of them if the third in the table, Greuther Fürth, does not win in Paderborn. All games on the 33rd day of play begin at 3:30 p.m. (Sky).
“We have it in our own hands, that’s motivation enough,” said VfL coach Thomas Reis. For Bochum it would be the first division return after eleven years. Kiel could be the first club from Schleswig-Holstein to write Bundesliga history. Despite the excellent starting position before the last two games of the season, nobody used the word ascent for the DFB-Pokal semi-finalists. Only defender Simon Lorenz leaned a little out of the window after Kiel’s 3-2 win against Regensburg during the week: “Of course we don’t want to give up second place now.”
Only third-placed SpVgg Greuther Fürth (58) can reach the direct promotion places of a pursuing trio – but only with strong support. “I don’t see us as hunted. We also want to be hunters ”, said Greuther Fürth’s coach Stefan Leitl before the guest appearance at SC Paderborn. The Franks still have Hamburger SV (55) and Fortuna Düsseldorf (52) on their necks, who want to at least reach the relegation rank. They can only do that through mistakes by their competitors and through victories in the last two games. HSV coach Horst Hrubesch, who gave the Hanseatic people new courage, summed up the situation aptly: “These are two games. Sparkling wine or seltzer. ” (dpa)
