Düsseldorf Benrath and the coolest way to spend 10.7 million euros: new ice rink inaugurated – Ddorf-Aktuell

The coolest way to spend 10.7 million euros starts at Kappeler Strasse 107. The new Benrath Ice World is ready. The city leaders spoke on Sunday (September 5th) and cut a ribbon. It really starts on Friday, September 10th: Because then the kids will get back what has been on the brink for a long time.

Expensive pleasure

“In other cities, ice rinks have turned into indoor soccer fields or sports halls,” said Mayor Stephan Keller in his opening speech. And for a tiny moment it sounded as if the administrator from the Düsseldorf City Hall had wished that the Benrath ice cream thing could be rewarded in a similar way.

Online petitions from users

But then the Stadt-Sparkasse Düsseldorf and the city and all the bargain hunters did the math without the penguin, who has been the mascot of the Benrath ice rink for 40 years. Two successful petitions to save the ice rink in the Paulsmühle, which opened in 1979, showed the councilors in Düsseldorf where Bartel found his skate happiness. At that time, the old hall was a gift from the Stadt-Sparkasse to the city – for the 100th anniversary of the bank, which got out of financing after four decades.

Kappeler 107 – ice cream for everyone

Politicians found a place for the new ice rink in the industrial park. The Düsseldorf-Benrath Ice Rink Foundation, an offshoot of the Benrath Palace and Park Foundation, manages the money. With Anja Mathis, there is a new operations manager after the honorary ice cream man Manfred Otto, as boss, saved the old hall from collapse several times. Only ice cream master Benjamin Beyene has stayed the same and says: “The new hall is much better insulated than the old hall. It’s fun to work here. “

The offer

It starts on Friday: disco, birthdays, ice stock sport, ice skating courses and – new – figure skating courses are then possible in the industrial area. The matter with the connection to the S-Bahn is worse than before: From the S-Bahn station Düsseldorf Benrath there are four stops and a walk or a quick jump on the bus. But in the brand new ice world, they hope that it will work out. In any case, the rental ice skates hang ready and in the bistro there are again currywurst fries, with a cult factor.

Because of Corona, the number of ice skaters will initially be limited to around 150, tickets must be purchased online in advance. 3G rules apply (recovered, vaccinated or freshly tested). The ice skating times should be activated 72 hours in advance. Five ice hockey clubs have also booked training times.
