Düsseldorf (dpa) – Two German teams have reached the semi-finals of the table tennis Champions League in Düsseldorf.
Host Borussia Düsseldorf won their quarter-finals 3-1 against Portuguese champions Sporting Lisbon and will now face UMMC Yekaterinburg from Russia in the last four on Thursday. Record European champion Boll won the first individual against Nigerian Bode Abiodun in 3-1 sets and also got the third point against Diogo Carvalho (3-1).
The German champions 1. FC Saarbrücken beat the French club GV Hennebont late in the evening after falling 2-0 down with 3-2. In the decisive fifth individual, the world number 16 defeated. Patrick Franziska beats ex-Düsseldorf Omar Assar 3-2.
The semi-final opponent is the Russian favorite Fakel Orenburg with the German national player Dimitrij Ovtcharov. The five-time winner easily won 3-0 against Roskilde on-board tennis from Denmark. Because of the corona pandemic, the Champions League will be played as a tournament format in Düsseldorf in just eight days. 15 teams take part.
