Almost 100 employees of the air security checks and strikers from the University Hospital Essen, who support the inspectors in their protest, demonstrated against abuses at Düsseldorf Airport on Wednesday afternoon. “With the demonstration we draw attention to the blatant personnel problems. The employees can no longer do it,” says Özay Tarim from the Verdi service union, which organized the protest. “The problem is homegrown. Unfortunately, it will no longer be possible to solve it in the short term. The victims are the employees and the passengers,” said Tarim.

For weeks, there have been long queues in front of the checkpoints, especially at Düsseldorf Airport. The airport and the Verdi service union see the reason for this in the lack of staff at the responsible security company. Up to 100 control staff per shift would sometimes be missing, they criticize. According to experts, passengers at Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports must therefore be prepared for problems, also with a view to the upcoming long weekend and the start of the summer holidays.

Verdi also calls on the employees at the checkpoints to report so-called overload and danger reports. “Let’s throw this occupational health and safety notice at the feet of those responsible and thus prove the failure of their work organization in passenger control,” says Tarim. An overload notification offers employees the opportunity to draw attention to grievances and to be able to exonerate themselves in the context of any liability claims. These reports were last reported by inspectors at Düsseldorf Airport in 2017 – as a result of an excessive workload due to staff shortages.
