Düsseldorf Airport: 5 flights to Turkey canceled | Regional

Düsseldorf – On the first Saturday of the holiday, there were again problems with handling at Düsseldorf Airport – air travelers to Turkey were still affected.

The airline Pegasus canceled five of 17 planned flights to Turkey without giving reasons and relocated another six flights to Frankfurt, Münster and Cologne-Bonn, said an airport spokesman. Hundreds of travelers had waited in front of the unoccupied counters on Friday.

The airport spokesman: “We regret the situation and the associated inconvenience for our passengers and support with our own staff to inform the passengers about the situation.”

Officials from the federal and state police also helped on site.

The federal police confirmed that they were again on duty in the departure hall on Saturday to get the unrest under control. The state and federal police had already calmed the situation on Friday when there were long waiting times at the airline counters.

According to the Düsseldorf police, there was an angry mood. But there were no riots or physical injuries.

A spokesman for BILD: “There were a lot of people who didn’t know where to go. In order to channel this and to prevent panic and tumult, we have been on duty with around 40 police officers since Friday. “

According to the airport spokesman, Pegasus canceled four flights to Turkey on Friday evening. Passengers should be able to take them on Saturday afternoon from Düsseldorf.

“We regret that the airline Pegasus and its handling service provider were not able to handle their scheduled flights to Turkey from Düsseldorf as planned and in full on yesterday, Friday,” said the spokesman.

The airline itself did not initially comment on the incident.

According to WDR, it was said from circles at the airport that a contracting company for the airline had probably not sent enough staff for the holiday start. There were some employees there in the morning, but they were far too few and therefore stopped working.

Otherwise, the start of the summer holidays at Düsseldorf Airport has so far gone smoothly, the airport spokesman said. Around 120,000 passengers are expected in Düsseldorf up to and including Sunday on the first holiday weekend.
