The International Culture and Sports Association of Roma Carmen eV is celebrating a week of festivities from April 8th to 11th. The project “EmpoR – Empowerment for Roma” is reminiscent of 50 years of the Roma civil rights movement and 30 years of Carmen eV. Due to the corona, a happy party with get-togethers is not possible, so various online program items are organized.

The festival week
In addition to a greeting from the Federal President a. D., Dr. Rita Süssmuth, the long history of the Roma in Europe and the development of civil rights and participation are examined in lectures, discussions, musical contributions and a memorial hour. Members of Carmen eV describe the history of guest workers and their descendants. Together with representatives of the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the status and perspectives of the social participation of the Roma and Sinti will be discussed. The organizers invite you to an online cultural evening on Friday evening (April 9th). It is designed by actor Nedjo Osman1 and young members of the Wuppertal association RomaMusikTalente eV.
At the site of the former Höherweg internment camp, a public commemoration will take place on Saturday (April 10th) of the several hundred Sinti and Roma who were first interned there from 1939 to 1940, then deported and, for the most part, murdered. The Carmen association wants to build a house of memory and culture at this location. The festival week ends with a festive online conclusion on Sunday, April 11th.
The festival week takes place as part of the “Empowerment for Rome – EmpoR” project. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry for Family, Seniors, Women and Youth as part of the federal program “Live Democracy!” And the “Remembrance, Responsibility and Future” foundation (EVZ).

Carmen eV
The Carmen eV association has been campaigning for the interests of immigrant Roma since it was founded in 1991. They pursue the goal of achieving a better coexistence of cultures in society. To this end, they want to promote equal participation in society and the empowerment of the Roma. This includes improving the educational opportunities of young Roma, fighting against prejudice, discrimination, antiziganism, racism and preserving the culture and language of the Roma. Carmen eV is active in Düsseldorf, North Rhine-Westphalia, throughout Germany and beyond. Sami Dzemailovski, CEO of Carmen eV, is pleased that the association has also been able to revive projects like JuRoma. Young Roma get involved and develop many activities, including sport.

Around 150 people protested against the corona rules and vaccination in downtown Düsseldorf on Easter Monday (April 5th). They asked for home-made cardboard to stop vaccinating immediately. And complained about being restricted in their self-determination by the hygiene rules. The protest was accompanied by rattling loudspeakers. Both at the meeting place and on the route, counter-demonstrators confronted the Corona doubters with opposition.
