That’s what it’s about
The “Duro 23” emergency exercise took place at Zurich Airport on Tuesday afternoon.
It was a so-called “full scale” exercise. All organizations that could be affected in the event of an emergency at Zurich Airport were involved.
In addition to Flughafen Zürich AG, participants included the Zurich Canton Police, Zurich Protection and Rescue, Swiss, Civil Defense, the Zurich Canton Public Prosecutor’s Office and the Federal Security Investigation Board.
A plane crash was simulated, followed by a burning house and an overturned touring car.
A plane crashes over a populated area while landing at Zurich Airport in Kloten ZH, numerous people are injured and there are also deaths. A horror scenario for travelers and residents. However, to ensure that emergency services are prepared for such an emergency, regular training is extremely important. This example was therefore carried out in the “Duro 23” exercise at Zurich Airport.
“The aim of the exercise is to identify weaknesses in the management and cooperation between the organizations involved,” says Stefan Tschudin, Chief Operation Officer at Zurich Airport. It is a so-called “full scale” exercise that is carried out every two years at Zurich Airport. This is stipulated by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA).
Over 600 people involved
In addition to the plane crash of an Airbus A220, a house fire and a car accident with a touring car were also simulated. Those involved included the crisis centers at Zurich Airport, the Zurich Cantonal Police, Zurich Protection and Rescue and the cantonal public prosecutor’s office.
According to exercise leader Marc Schäfer, over 600 people took part in the mega exercise. In addition to the approximately 400 emergency services, 180 extras – including a school class – were also involved. An initial conclusion could already be reached during the exercise: There seemed to be too few support vehicles for the emergency vehicles to travel safely. But as Schäfer said: “An exercise in which everything goes well was a bad exercise.”
